The Wow of Now
I stared at my reflection and reflected
while brushing my teeth, on all the things
involved in adulting that, if neglected,
lead to shambles and stings.
Brush twice a day, eat well, and sleep.
Make sure you make your bed.
There are appointments to keep.
Ensure the kids and pets are fed.
Regular oil changes, needed repairs,
laundry loads, sinks of plates and pots,
sweeping, mopping, lots and lots
of things to remember, countless cares.
Pay the bills, find time for hobbies
that feed your soul and keep you going.
Account for washing of all the bodies
and don’t forget about lawn mowing.
The list keeps growing as I age,
often feeling tired, uninspired.
But each day I turn the page
refusing to get mired.
The tiny wren outside my window croons
head held high, throat outthrust.
My son and daughter watch cartoons
before we put her on the bus.
Too much focus in the wrong place
can make life just a grind
but if we turn our face
we just might be able to find,
That time is just a tempting trick,
look too long and it’ll make you sick.
But enter into the power of now
and all you’ll be able to say is, “Wow!”
